During the school holidays we found ourselves at a play, The Surfer and the Mermaid.
As soon as it started as a one-man show, I was worried that my children might be a little bit too young for it. Little Monkey was probably too young, but she enjoyed looking at the mermaid pictures on the screen. Big Boy sat there mesmerised throughout the play.
It was about a young surfer who was singled out my the mermaids as someone who loves the ocean and can help them spread their message for help. The mermaid took the surfer on a tour of the ocean, to meet the whales and to see how much harm humans are doing by dumping their rubbish into water.
After the play we talked about how the ocean is the whales’ home and how we wouldn’t like it if someone came and threw some rubbish into our home. Big Boy observed that we could clean up afterwards, but the whales couldn’t because they had no hands.
The play inspired me to finally finish a crocheted mermaid that I had been working on and here it is!

Wonderful post and lovely mermaid ~~ thanks, namaste, (A Creative Harbor)
I love the comment about whales not having hands. Kids have such a gift for getting straight to the heart of the truth. Adorable mermaid too!

Wow, that’s a lovely crocheted mermaid! The last time I crocheted was in elementary school! It’s good that the kids enjoyed the play and that it made an impact on them.
So cute! Love her hair.

Yes, the hair takes forever. That’s why I rarely make dolls.
